The purpose the observance, established by the United Nations (UN) in 1995, is to highlight ways to prevent desertification and recover from drought. The theme for RDCDD this year was the 'Ecosystem-Based Adaptation' with the slogan ‘Land Belongs to the Future, Let’s Climate Proof It’.
On the occasion of RDCDD, various organizations of the United Nations System, international and non-governmental organizations and other interested stakeholders organized a series of outreach activities worldwide and in Africa in particular.
According to the UN, RDCDD is an occasion to remind that desertification can be effectively tackled, that solutions are possible by strengthening community participation and co-operation at all levels of the administration.
