World Elders Day: Do we thank them enough?
Saying I Love You may not be the Indian culture but let us adopt this western quality and love our elders. It is time that we tell Grandma, Grandpa, Mother and Father what they mean and how much they are always there in our lives.

I STILL remember the time my grandma had a fall that broke her hip. I watched her each day as she went from the master of the house who used to reign over our household to becoming the baby who would steal food and forget our names. She literally faded in front of me. We used to feel amused at her fumbling words and the fact that she couldn't remember her own kid’s name, never realising that we would soon be in her shoes. On World Senior Citizen day take a breath and thank your elders for being there for you as I always do so for my grandma even when she is no more and it's probably of no use.

With progress of education in India, certain parts of the society have progressed and these days 30 is the new 20. Having said that, India still remains one of the countries, along with China, that have the highest number of senior citizens. As per a news report in mid-day.com India's older population is projected to quadruple by 2050. Every year on October 1, World’s Elders Day, the government does something but somehow the youths are forgetting their responsibilities towards their elders. In 2011 there are clearly two groups of senior citizens. One who do not agree that they should retire and the other who want a quiet life after the stipulated age of 60 as they feel that they had enough of the rush.

One can name a lot of celebrities and stars who have rediscovered life after 60 like Amitabh Bahchan. These kinds of people just do not want to stop. In our daily life also we can cite examples of a neighbour who plays tennis every evening, is involved in the society development issues and feels that now that they do not have to go out to work every day and they can actually start living. The other side of the scenario is not as rosy, as opposed to the other group these people actually want to stop and take a breath. They are the precise reason that the number of old age home is increasing in this fast-paced world.

Delhi Government on World Elder’s Day 2011 has decided to give senior citizens monthly DTC bus passes on payment of  a nominal Rs 50 for travelling in non-AC buses and Rs 150 for travelling in AC buses. India, a place known for its hospitality, has somewhere gone western as they feel that old age homes are a better suited place for elders of the family. Although filmmakers are doing their bit to curb the trend by making films like Baghban but the increasing number of age old shelters are telling a different story.
