World Environment Day 2010: Let us stop extinction
In totality, there are roughly 17,291 species that are on the threatened list, which include little plants to those which have captured the human imagination like the tigers. However, there are many species that have disappeared unknown to man.
WORLD ENVIRONMENT Day 2010 is being celebrated all across the globe today, June 5, and the theme is influenced by the fact that 2010 has been declared as the International Year of Biodiversity. This day is being observed to mark the importance of diverse life forms for the well being of humanity and it also reminds us of our duty to safeguard the environment and reduce the loss of biodiversity.

This year the theme of World Environment Day 2010 is “Many Species. One Planet. One Future.” This theme reflects the important task of saving and conserving the different forms of life on the earth. There are millions of humans, plants and animals that have a stake in this world and it is our duty to safeguard each and every specie to ensure a healthy and joyous future for all of us.

On this World Environment Day 2010, the focus is on the individual and collective power of humanity to ensure that there is a check on extinction. It is important to conserve the nature and mankind will have to use all its resources to win the race against extinction of species.

It is pertinent to mention that out of 5 to 100 million species that exist on this earth, the scientists have managed to identify only 2 million. This clearly shows that there is a lot of stuff which is unknown to the human beings, whose actions knowingly or unknowingly are leading to extinction.

In totality, there are roughly 17,291 species that are on the threatened list, which include little plants to those which have captured the human imagination like the tigers. However, there are many species that have disappeared unknown to human beings.

And the reason behind this is: The human activities, particularly uncontrolled development which has led to elimination of huge tracts of forests, led to the death of `wetlands, reduced the fish stock by half and led to depletion of the ozone layer.

On this World Environment Day 2010, we will have to reiterate our commitment to the cause of the mother earth and resolve to be more responsible and eco-friendly.
