This year, the World Environment Day (WED) is going to be observed on June 5 with the theme "Raise your voice not the sea level" as announced by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) that coordinates the observance across the world.
The theme is meant to raise the concern for the
pollution created by us at our own level by degrading the nature,
harming landscape, inappropriate life style, excessive use of
vehicles, continued use of plastic bags, etc. We need to self-reflect
and reduce the assault on the environment at our personal levels to
mitigate the climate change.
Some recent studies have shown that each of us
creates about a kilogram of waste per day which is not disposed of
properly and releases methane gas that contributes to global warming.
We need to change our life styles to cut down methane we pump into
the environment at our own personal levels..
According to UNEP, studies on climate change have
shown that in the last 100 years, the sea level has increased in the
range of 10 to 25 centimeters at various places in the world. Studies
also warn us that if we do not change our life style and consumerist
way of living, sea will rise another 50 centimeters by the year 2100
putting life into danger in many coastal cities.
Therefore, there is a need to adopt an
environmentally friendly lifestyle and switch over to eco-culture and
green technologies at our own personal levels.
