World Health Day 2015: Govt is working tirelessly to realise the dream of a Healthy India - PM Modi
The World Health Day, which is a global health awareness day is being celebrated today under the sponsorship of World Health Organisation (WHO). Every year WHO takes a specific theme and tries to draw worldwide attention towards that theme and this year's theme is 'Food Safety from farm to plate'.

To give a background about this theme, it has been observed that unsafe food is linked to the death of around 2 million people annually. The food that we consume contains many harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites and chemical substances which are responsible for more than 200 diseases which ranges from diarrhea to cancer.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his message on the occasion of World Health Day said that Food Safety is an essential pre-condition for good health & we all must focus on it.

He said that his government was working tirelessly to realise the dream of a Healthy India

On this day WHO wants to alert the people who are working in different government sectors, farmers, manufacturers, retailers, health practitioners and the consumers about the importance of food safety and the part they should play to ensure that everyone will get safe food to eat.

Food safety is a scientific discipline describing handling, preparation and storage of food in such a way that it prevent food born diseases. This food safety should be followed all along the food production chain, right from the farmer and manufacturer to vendors and consumers.

The five key principles of food hygiene are:

  • Prevent the contamination of food from pathogens.

  • Raw and cooked food should be separated, so that the cooked food does not get contaminated.

  • Food should be cooked at appropriate temperasture and for appropriate length of time so that it does not destroy the vitamins and minerals, but killd the pathogens present in the food.

  • Store the food in proper temperature.

  • The raw materials used to prepare the food should be washed appropriately.
