THE WORLD Health Organization on Tuesday said that the swine flu pandemic was over. WHO Director-General Margaret Chan said the pandemic has "largely run its course." In recent months, the number of deaths from swine flu has fallen.

Margaret Chan announced the decision after consulting with the global body's emergency committee of top flu experts.

However, WHO still said health officials should continue monitoring H1N1 infection rates as well as updating their plans on the basis of what was learnt during the pandemic, because there is still a chance it could raise again.

WHO Director-General Margaret Chan said in a conference call from Geneva that based on experiences with past pandemics the H1N1 virus is likely to take on the behavior of seasonal influenza virus and circulate for some years to come.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) swine flu or H1N1 influenza, since it was uncovered in Mexico and the United States in April 2009, has killed about 18,500 people and affected some 214 countries and territories. WHO declared H1N1 to be the first pandemic in decades in June 2009.

The CDC estimated about 10% of the cases of swine flu requiring hospitalization involved the elderly and 13% of those who died from flu and its complications, in the United States.
