World Homoeopathy Day: Views and counter-views
World Homoeopathy Day to commemorate the 264th birth anniversary of Dr Samuel Hahnemann on 10th April is slated to be held across many countries including India.

However, at a few places, the World Homeopathy Awareness Week is celebrated annually from April 10 to 16. Homeopathy is deemed as 'a system of alternative medicine that uses small, highly diluted doses of natural substances to trigger the bodies' own healing abilities.'

The week-long event is mainly organised and coordinated by the World Homeopathy Awareness Organisation (WHAO), in which both homeopaths and those who have been healed with homeopathy participate to exchange positive experiences. WHAO is a not-for-profit organisation which is run by volunteers to promote homeopathy as a sound healing system.

"The date of 10th April was chosen to mark the start of this event as it is the birthday of Dr Samuel Hahnemann, the German physician who is credited with creating homeopathy," inform the organizers on their website stressing the need to raise public awareness of and improve accessibility to homeopathy.

However, there are scientists and medical experts who every year debunk homeopathy saying that it is completely ineffective system of medication. The latest  thinking, based on meta research studies  on  homeopathy in Australia, reports that hardly any 'good quality evidence to support the claim that homeopathy is effective in treating health conditions'.

In some scientific circles, it is strongly held that alternative treatment developed by German physician Dr Samuel Hahnemann with 'no interest in detailed pathology, and none in conventional diagnosis and treatment' is a total debunk.

Mahatma Gandhi had great faith in this alternative healing system and had once said, "Homeopathy cures a larger percentage of cases than any other form of treatment and is beyond doubt safer and more economical."

However, there is a counter view by Jim Al-Khalili, who says, "...Alternative medicines like homeopathy or new age therapies ? reiki healing ? a lot of people buy into it and it grates against my rationalist view of the world. There is no evidence for it. It is deceitful. It is insidious. I feel passionately about living in a society with a rationalist view of the world."

Yet another view, as expressed by Eliphas Levi  goes like this, "Occult Medicine is essentially sympathetic. Reciprocal affection, or at least real goodwill, must exist between doctor and patient. Syrups and juleps have very little inherent virtue; they are what they become through the mutual opinion of operator and subject; hence homoeopathic medicine dispenses with them and no serious inconvenience follows."
