World Honey Bee Day observed, President Kovind visits Apiary at Rashtrapati Bhavan estate
President of India Ram Nath Kovind visited the Apiary in the President's Estate on the occasion of World Honey Bee Day celebrated on August 19, stated an official release.

"As a unique project, the Apiary was established, in the President's Estate for the first time with the help of Khadi & Village Industries Commission (KVIC) as the Government is promoting the 'Honey Mission' in the country," it said.

The release informed that at present, 200 bee boxes have been set up which will increase to 500.  The Apiary will produce high quality honey, wax, pollen etc as well as help increase flora, fauna in Rashtrapati Bhavan through pollination.

The Honey Bee Day is an awareness day started by beekeepers in the United States to build community awareness of the bee industry, through education and promotion which has now become a worldwide observation.

According to its organisers, the observance was started with a simple concept of bringing together beekeepers, bee associations, as well as other interested groups to connect with the communities to advance beekeeping.

The organisers hold that by working together and harnessing the efforts that so many already accomplish, and using a united effort one day a year, the rewards and message is magnified many times over.

"We encourage bee associations, individuals, and other groups to get involved. The program is free and open to all," wrote the organisers on their website.

These days besides the self-employed bee-keepers, commercial firms exist which even transport bees, moving from field to field as the crop needs pollinating and allowing the beekeeper to charge for the pollination services they provide. In some countries, bee-keeping has become an industry carrying out large-scale commercial operations both for honey production and pollination.
