World is running out of antibiotics, warns WHO report
On one side the human population is becoming increasingly dependent of antibiotics and on the other side, the world is running out of antibiotics.

As per a report by the World Health Organisation, very few new antibiotics are being developed to counter the growing threat of infections that have developed resistance to drugs.

As per the report, the total number of antibiotics that are being developed is 51. A figure that is way less than what is required keeping in mind the growing dependency on antibiotics and the need for new ones.

While the WHO is also making efforts to improvise the methods of infection prevention and control, the need for antibiotics has not been erased.

The report was authored by a group of physicians, microbiologists, and experts in antibiotic resistance and drug development. The report also said that if developments continue at the same pace, merely 10 new antibiotics and biological drugs would be added in the next one decade. The authors have also said that many of the new drugs that are being developed are drugs which patients have already developed drug resistance to and are mostly modifications of currently existing antibiotics. The authors have warned that such attempts will create only a short-term solution while leaving the major problem unaffected. An example of this drug-resistant tuberculosis, a disease for which no drug has yet been developed.

Experts have said that such a report should not come as a surprise as the funding for research in the field has severely been cut down.

Running short of antibiotics can be disastrous for the world given the number of people that have already grown dependent on antibiotics and the resistance that humans have developed against the bacteria.
