Today, March 11, is World Kidney Day (WKD) an initiative started by the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and the International Federation of Kidney Foundations (IFKF) in 2006 to spread awareness to help prevent kidney diseases.
TODAY IS the World Kidney Day (WKD). The day is being observed since 2006. The initiative for the observance of the day was jointly taken by the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and the International Federation of Kidney Foundations (IFKF).
A normal adult's kidneys are about the size of our fists. They are located deep in the abdomen, just beneath the rib cage.
Main functions of our kidneys are: • to remove toxins and excess water from our blood; • to help in controlling blood pressure;
• to produce red blood cells; • to keep our bones healthy.
On this WKD make yourself aware of the importance of kidneys and establish a life style that prevents kidney diseases. Take care of yourself by taking the following advice seriously.
• Exercise daily - yoga, brisk walk or jogging. • Keep control on your blood sugar level through regular check ups and consultations • Have a balanced diet and keep your weight under control • Do not smoke since it lowers the flow of blood to the kidneys and increases the risk of kidney cancer by almost 50 percent.
