World Migratory Bird Day: UN's focus is on Unifying Voices for Bird Conservation
The UN proclaimed World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) is observed on the second Saturday of October, consequently, the observance falls on October 13 this year. The observance is being held in various countries by the UN agencies, bird watchers, nature lovers, animal welfare groups and environment conservation activists.

The main purpose of WMBD is to organise an awareness-raising campaign highlighting the need for the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats with a global outreach. Also, the observance is meant to work as an effective tool to help raise global awareness of the threats faced by migratory birds, their ecological importance, and the need for international cooperation to conserve them.

The UN stated that 2018 was an important transition year in the history of World Migratory Bird Day - unifying the planet's major migratory bird corridors, or flyways: the African-Eurasian flyway, the East Asian-Australasian flyway, and the Americas flyways.

"Celebrated from now on twice a year, on the Second Saturday in May and in October, WMBD aims to reach out to a broader audience and amplify its message for bird conservation. As a new global platform that unifies efforts worldwide, WMBD will be reinforcing education and awareness-raising about the need to protect migratory birds and their habitats - at all different levels, in all parts of the world," added the UN website.

The observance is also being marked by public events such as bird festivals, education programmes, exhibitions and bird-watching excursions along with sharing of individual events  to inspire people to take action too.
