World observes International Day of Older Persons
The UN-established International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) was observed on 1st October across the world with the theme "Stepping into the Future: Tapping the Talents, Contributions and Participation of Older Persons in Society."

The world community was urged by the UN to provide enabling conditions and measures that influence the readiness of older persons to participate including securing healthcare, regular income, legal protection and access to financial services.

The main aim of the IDOP this year was to enable and expand the contributions of older people in their families, communities and societies at large and look for the pathways that support full and effective participation in old age, in accordance with old persons' basic rights, needs and preferences.

"This year's theme underscores the link between tapping the talents and contributions of older persons and achieving the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing, which is currently undergoing its third review and appraisal process," stated the UN on IDOP.

In New Delhi, Union Minister of Social Justice Thaawarchand Gehlot flaged off a 'walkathon' for older persons at India Gate to mark IDOP attended by several thousand people.

Minister of State Krishan Pal Gurjar took the pledge with other dignitaries and both the ministers took part in 1 km walkathon with all the dignitaries and participants, stated a release.
