World Refugee Day observed across globe
The World Refugee Day (WRD) is being observed today, June 20, across the globe by the UN agencies to raise awareness about the plight of refugees in various countries. It was in 2000 that the United Nations General Assembly decided that from 2001, WRD will be observed on 20 June globally.
UN chief, Ban Ki-moon, in his message on the occasion of WRD said, "Finding durable solutions for the displaced will require more solidarity and burden-sharing by the international community.  On World Refugee Day, I call on the international community to intensify efforts to prevent and resolve conflicts, and to help achieve peace and security so that families can be reunited and refugees can return home."

UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres, in his message said, ?With violence uprooting more people than ever, we are facing unprecedented challenges protecting and helping them. We see the destruction of families and communities on a scale that is truly horrifying, and much more needs to be done to stop and resolve conflicts."

The events across the world are coordinated in more than 100 countries by The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), involving government officials, humanitarian aid workers, celebrities, civilians and the forcibly displaced themselves.

According to UNHCR, the main aim of WRD is to draw the public's attention to millions of refugees in various countries as well as internally displaced persons like Kashmiri Pandits who had been forced to flee their homes due to societal conflicts and persecution. The mandate of UNHCR is to provide international protection to refugees on a non-political and humanitarian basis and to seek permanent solutions for them.
