World Refugee Day (WRD) was observed on 20th June in many countries. The day was established by United Nations (UN) General Assembly in 2001 for the cause of refugees and displaced persons.
WORLD REFUGEE Day is observed to draw the attention of the world
community and general public to the millions of refugees worldwide who are forced to flee their homes due various social and political conflicts.
At the international level the United Nations Refugee Agency commemorated WRD in Washington from June 18 to 20. According to the UNHCR, an estimated 800,000 people were forced to forcibly flee their homes in 2011 to various conflicts and about 42 million people were living as displaced persons worldwide.
Angelina Jolie, 37, is a special envoy of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and she gave $100000 for the cause of Syrian Refugees on WRD this year.
On the occasion of WRD, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said, "World Refugee Day is a moment to remember all those affected, and time to intensify our support.
