In Jaipur, the local unit of Indian Dental Association celebrated the World Smile Day (WSD) by organizing a seminar on dental and oral health and care, which was inaugurated by Rajasthan health minister, Dr. AA Khan, reported Rajasthan Patrika. Some local schools also held brief events to highlight the benefits of smiling on the occasion of WSD.
WSD is celebrated on the first Friday in the month of October every year. The first WSD was organized in the year 1999 and has been held annually ever since then. Now, it is celebrated widely and many schools all over the world celebrate WSD to make the institutions congenial places for students. These days, smiley icons are used to express one's likeness for something.
WSD was initiated by Harvey Ball, a US commercial artist, known to have created the Smiley Face in 1963. After Harvey died in 2001, the Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation was created to honour his name and memory. The Foundation with the slogan “improving this world, one smile at a time", is the main sponsor of the event.
According to a scribe Michael Harper, the iconic yellow smiley face, has become an international sign of goodwill and peace. Often, it is commonly represented as a yellow circle or sphere with two black dots representing eyes and a black half circle representing the mouth. The popularity of smiley has made it a term used as a generically for am emoticon.
