World Standards Day observed across the globe
World Standards Day was observed on October 14 across the world with conferences, seminars and campaigns to emphasise the need for standardisation and quality marking for products and services.

At the international level, International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), International Organization for Standardization (ISO), International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) join hands to coordinate the event.

The main aim of the observance is to raise awareness among regulators, industry and consumers as to the importance of standardisation of various products and services and its contribution to the global economy.

In India, the Indian Standards Institute (ISI) takes the lead in celebrating the day. On the occasion of the observance, in Delhi, a seminar was inaugurated at the Scope Complex by the Union Minister of Civil Supplies and related matters, Ram Vilas Paswan in which issues related to standardisation, testing, ranking, quality marking and hallmarking were discussed along with consumer protection.

"We must make a move to standardise services like education and health since over the last few years the standards of these two vital services in the government sectors have fallen down tremendously. Though some ranking system for the higher education institutions has been introduced but for school education, no standards have been fixed. The issue of the quality of education should be resolved so that school children get the education of reasonable quality under Right to Education Act," said Prabha Kishore, a retired school teacher in Jaipur.
