World Suicide Prevention Day: Suicide rate has increased by 15.8% in India
September 10 is celebrated as World Suicide Prevention Day and this time the theme is Preventing Suicide: Reaching Out and Saving Lives. Suicide is largely a preventable public health issue, causing almost half of all violent deaths in the world.

India has highest number of suicides in the world. According to a National Crime Records Bureau's (NCRB) report the number of suicides in the country has increased by 15.8%. The NCRB report further mentions Mumbai and the other three metropolitan cities Chennai, Bengaluru, Delhi as the top mega cities to report higher number of suicides.

According to a WHO data, in India every 3 seconds a person attempts to die. In the country suicide is one of the top three causes of death among the young in the age group of 15-35 years.

The psychological, social and financial impact of suicide on family and the society is immeasurable. Each suicide leaves at least 6 people devastated. Recently its been an alarming cause for increase in suicidal behaviours amongst young people aged 15 to 25 years old, worldwide.

On this World Suicide Prevention Day twitteraties took to the micro-blogging site and tried to raise awareness against suicide.
