World Teachers' Day to be observed on October 5
World Teachers' Day is celebrated on October 5. On this day the students, parents and communities are encouraged to offer thanks and recognition to the teachers. It was initiated by the Director-General of UNESCO, in Geneva in 1993.
THOUGH INDIA celebrates Teachers' Day on September 5 but the World Teachers’ Day is observed on October 5. On this day the students, parents and communities are encouraged to offer thanks and recognition to the teachers. It is held that teachers influence the hearts and minds of children the most since they (are meant to) not only educate, but they also help to shape and frame our children's beliefs, values and behaviours.

Here are some facts about the World Teachers’ Day:

Year of origin:
World Teachers' Day was initiated by the Director-General of UNESCO, Federico Mayor, at the International Conference on Education in Geneva in 1993.

Pupose:
To mobilise support for teachers and to ensure that the needs of future generations will continue to be met by teachers and raise public awareness campaign to highlight the contributions of the teaching profession.

Spread:
Over 100 countries

According to UNESCO, World Teachers' Day represents a significant token of the awareness, understanding and appreciation displayed for the vital contribution that teachers make to education and development.

Education International (EI) believes that World Teachers' Day should be internationally recognised and celebrated around the world.
