WORLD WATER Day is held annually on March 22 to draw attention to the importance of fresh water and reiterate our resolve to save it. The observance of World Water Day is an initiative that grew out of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development.
As we all know that each year World Water Day works on a theme and this year's theme being 'Clean water for a healthy world'. Nations across the globe will thrive to raise awareness about sustaining healthy ecosystems and human well-being through addressing the increasing water quality challenges.
A report by the World Health Organization (WHO) reveals 4 billion cases of diarrhea each year in addition to several other cases of illness due to lack of access to clean water. The other major revelations said that waterborne diseases cause death of more than 1.5 million children each year,Millions of women and children spend several hours a day collecting water from distant, often polluted sources. Poor people living in the slums often pay 5-10 times more per litre of water than wealthy people living in the same city. The past year was one of inflation in food prices, increasing groundwater depletion and plummeting water quality, rising agitation about river pollution, etc. At least 100 million of our citizens had no assurance of the safety of the water they drank every single day.In India, the Ministry of Water Resources has organized National Ground Water Congress to observe ‘World Water Day- 2010’ on 22nd March,2010. During the week from 22nd to 27th March, workshops, seminars etc. will be held all over the country by various organisations to raise awareness on water quality issues. However, a series of practical steps are required to tackle this highly paramount and sensitive issue. It is believed that the water issues have finally taken a centrestage this year. But we must understand that the judicious use of water is a shared resposibility. So lets all contribute in our own little ways to make the World Water Day a grand success.
