World Wetlands Day celebrated across the globe
World Wetlands Day was celebrated across the globe on February 2 with the theme Wetlands for our Future: Sustainable Livelihoods 2016. This theme is selected to highlight the vital role of wetlands for the future of humanity and specifically their relevance towards achieving the new Sustainable Development Goals spelled out by the United Nations.

The observance was coordinated by the Ramsar Secretariat in Iran that provided outreach materials to help raise public awareness about the importance and value of wetlands.

World Wetlands Day marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on February 2, 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea. The day was celebrated for the first time in 1997 and made an encouraging beginning.

Each year, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and groups of citizens at all levels of the community have acted to raise public awareness of wetland values and benefits in general.

The website of the Ramsar Secretariat posted reports from v arious countries of WWD activities ranging from lectures and seminars, nature walks, children's art contests, sampan races, and community clean-up days, to radio and television interviews and letters to newspapers, to the launch of new wetland policies, new Ramsar sites, and programmes.
