World's most sensitive dark-matter detector gets an underground laboratory
With the recent shifting of the world's most sensitive dark-matter detector about a mile underground in a South Dakota gold mine in the US, the topic of dark matter, which constitute most of the matter in the universe, has come into focus once again.

ACCORDING TO the scientists, since dark matter cannot be seen directly but its existence and properties are inferred from its gravitational effects on visible matter, radiation, and the large scale structure of the universe.

There is currently much ongoing research by scientists attempting to discover dark matter directly. And, direct detection experiments are required to operate in deep underground laboratories to reduce the background from cosmic rays.

It is being said by the end of this year the underground South Dakota laboratory in the US will start collecting data with a good chance to discover dark matter.

Dark matter is an elusive matter known only by its gravitational pull and is so far undetected. By discovering dark matter, scientists could explain how the world as we know it came to be.
