SLUM DWELLERS residing on the bank of Yamuna River are suffering with the river water crossing the mark of danger.
Due to incessant rain, flood alert has been sounded on Saturday (September 12). Precautionary measures are being taken by Delhi administration and government authorities had warned and asked the slum dwellers to evacuate the place and said that their food and healthcare would be looked after.
However, the slum dwellers complained that the government has not done much. They admitted that tents and water tankers were provided to them.
“Our crops have been destroyed. We are really very troubled, no one has done anything for us, since yesterday, we have been drenched in the rain, our belongings are spoilt, there has been a lot of damage,” said Rihanna, a slum dweller.
“Every thing has been washed away from our fields. Government must take serious actions which it has not yet taken. They only say that they are providing this and that on television but the fact is that nothing has been done yet,” said another slum dweller.
Haryana releasing about 400,000 cusecs of water also added to the flooding.
After continuous showers in the last two days, the capital received 576.8mm rain this season. The government must look into the present situation and take up developmental measures to control the flood situation in the capital.
