On Thursday, Bollywood veteran filmmaker Yash Chopra was named as the 'Asian Filmmaker of the Year' at the 14th Pusan International Film Festival. He will be given the award at the PIFF that will held from October 8 to 16.
VETERAN FILMMAKER Yash Chopra has been named as the 'Asian Filmmaker of the Year' at the 14th Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF) on Thursday (September 3).

The organisers of South Korea’s PIFF said in a statement that the award is being given to Yash Chopra in view of his tireless five- decade long devotion to Bollywood. His dedication towards the art and business of movie making has also helped in enhancing the global status of Indian as well as Asian movies.

It also mentions that Chopra, considered to be the king of romantic films, has raised the international profile of Indian cinema through tying up with Hollywood and other country’s production houses.

This influential filmmaker will be given the award in the festival to be held through October 8 to 16, in Pusan, South Korea.

Pusan International Film Festival is considered to be one of the best film festivals of Asia which honours films and people belonging to the film fraternity across the continent.

The festival will also screen four of his films directed or produced by his company Yash Raj Films. These movies are Lamhe, Dhoom 2, New York and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. Yash Raj Films is one of the India’s top production houses and it also distributes films abroad and had recently tied up with Walt Disney Company to release an animated film Roadside Romeo.

Yash Raj Films, mentioned as the biggest production house in India by PIFF organisers, has churned out more than fifty movies till date. Almost all the leading Bollywood actors and actresses including Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan have worked with this film giant.

The 76 year old filmmaker started his career as an assistant to his brother B R Chopra. His debut film was Dhool ka Phool in 1959, which did not receive box office success. Later, he became the pioneer of Hindi film industry for his brilliant films like Kabhi Kabhi, Silsila, Lamhe and Chandani which were not only critically praised but these films also got huge box office success.

Earlier PIFF winners include Iranian Mohsen Makhmalbaf, Taiwanese art- house director Hou Hsaio, Edward Young and the Hong Kong actor-singer Andy Lau.

The recognition of Bollywood director on the world stage has made the industry proud and also shows the popularity of Hindi films across the continent. Bollywood has always been criticised for its inabilities to produce technically sound films, but it is for sure that the award given to Chopra will put a full stop to all criticism for a while and encourage other young producers and directors to make films of international standard.

Hats off to Yash Chopra! All your well wishers and fans are waiting for your next release.
