Yoga therapy for obsessive compulsive disorder
Almost 40 percent of people in the world suffer from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) at some point in their lives. OCD is one of the most common kinds of anxiety disorder in the world. Usually, this disorder is treated with herbal remedies, medication and psychological counseling. But one of the lesser known yet highly effective methods for treatment of OCD is yoga.

OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE Disorder is a kind of anxiety disorder where an individual gets repetitive unwanted, unpleasant thoughts, or images, which causes anxiety. OCD can range from mild to severe, it affects the individuals differently and most people with this disorder follow a set pattern of behavior, which includes four main steps such as obsession, anxiety, compulsion and temporary relief.


A new research done by Researchers at the Dev Sanskriti University came up with a new treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, which is a combination of yoga and herbal medicines in a holistic way. The research was done with 60 patients who were suffering with OCD, and the participants were equally divided into males and females.

The participants were given individual sessions of therapeutic interventions of holistic approach for 60 minutes. The session includes doing 'Pranayama' for 10 minutes, chanting 'Gayatri Mantra' for 10 minutes and finally doing yoga for 20 minutes, reported Zee News.

Pranayama is a breathing exercise which helps to promote proper breathing, this helps to bring more oxygen to the blood and the brain. It also controls the 'prana', the vital life energy. Coming to Gayatri Mantra, it is the highly revered mantra in Hinduism. The formula of this mantra was taken from Yajurveda and the verses are taken from Rigveda. This holistic approach combining these specific techniques produces a significant reduction in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

The most widely used treatment for OCD like medication can have many side affects such as breathing problems, confusion, blood pressure changes, diarrhea, headache, hair loss, migraine and so on, this list goes on and on. So, to avoid such side affects, one can opt this holistic way of treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder through yoga.
