CHARVAK WAS a great physician of India of yore. He believed that the diet of a man or a woman or a child had a lot to do with the person's wellness. It is the bill of fare, the hygiene, the cooking style and above all the quantity of intake in the human body. The Indian sages of yore have emphasised that the food that an individual takes must be bought with the hard-earned money and not by fleecing another man.
'Hitt bhook; mitt bhook; ritt bhook', these three phrases sum up the essence of what one eats, how much one eats and what kind of money bought the food. To elaborate it a wee bit more, it can be said that one should eat only that kind of food that will do good to his body and mind; one should eat a bit less than the hunger requires, that is leave a little space in the stomach for food to digest properly and gases to circulate without causing stomachache.
Finally, the spiritual part of the food is taken care of by ensuring that the food has not been bought with the money acquired by dishonest means. Murder will be out is the old saying. If you murder a man to live a decent life by eating the spiritually contaminated food, you will never have peace of mind and never enjoy sound health. The guilt will continue pricking your conscience, eliminate happiness from your life and finally may pave the path to the funeral pyre where body is consigned to flames but the soul will remain a tormented one.
Eating the right food at the right time and thanking the Lord Almighty for what you receive lead to spiritual peace that you and I need.
