A COMPELLING and an unbelievable statement has came from Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, wherein he has suggested that India and Pakistan should remove their respective armies from the Siachen Glacier as it was a burden on exchequer of both the nations.
He said that the amount India spends on its armies is far more than what Pakistan spends. Such an amount which is spent on a daily basis can be better utilised in the welfare of its citizens. On an average, India spends 50 dollars per solider whereas Pakistan spends just about Rs 50 on each soldier.
These remarks were made by Zardari during a gathering at the Chief Minister's house in Karachi. He further added that it is high time that both the countries demilitarise the glacier because of the overhead expenses. Siachen glacier is the highest battle field in the world and India and Pakistan have been involved in numerous face offs since April 1984.The remarks were made with reference to the failed foreign minister's dialogue that ended on an angry note in Islamabad on July 15. Zardari said that India's internal politics were the main cause that led to this glitch. Sidelining the failed talks, Zardari said he is still hopeful about another round of meaningful dialogue with India.President Zardari further said that Pakistan has hired an international firm, which will work as an arbitrator and enable the resolution of water sharing disputes between India and Pakistan. He said that since India could not come up with a sustainable solution, Pakistan had too seek an international arbitrator.
