Zed heads committee organizing 'Nevada Cesar Chavez Day Multi-faith Service'
A community-wide 'Nevada Cesar Chavez Day Multi-faith Service' will be held at University of Nevada-Reno (UNR) for the first time on Chavez's birthday on March 31.
A “Nevada Cesar Chavez Day Committee” has been formed for this purpose with Rajan Zed, Daniel R. Sanchez and Victoria A. Sanderson as Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer respectively. Various political, religious, educational and community leaders of the state are expected to participate.
According to Hindu leader Rajan Zed, this service will offer multi-faith prayers, music, dance, reflections and multimedia display honoring the legacy of American hero and civil rights icon Cesar Estrada Chavez (March 31, 1927 – April 23, 1993).
The theme of this event, in honor of Chavez’s life and work, will be "Si se puede!" (Yes, it can be done!) after Chavez’s motto. It will also reflect on Chavez’s non-violent movement for social change and efforts at bringing equality-dignity-justice for all Americans, Zed adds.
Zed has urged that Nevada should declare March 31 as state holiday like some other states and rename one major street in all major towns of Nevada as Avenida Cesar Chavez.
All (students as well as non-students) are welcome to this free event, hosted by UNR Interfaith Students Club, to be held in The Theatre at Joe Crowley Student Union at UNR, starting 3:30pm.
