HINDU STATESMAN Rajan Zed has criticised Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) for organising a belly dance show during its fresher’s party held recently. Media reports claim that dancing girls entertained the students at the freshers’ orientation event.
Zed, the President of Universal Society of Hinduism, in a statement said that the dance show was highly inappropriate. Where does belly dance fit in with the ‘Gnayanam Paramam Dheyam’ (Knowledge is the Supreme Goal) motto of IITB, he questioned. He has demanded an enquiry into the case. Also, he demanded a public apology from Devang V. Khakhar, Director of IITB.
In Zed's opinion he would have had no problem if such a programme was held at a nightclub or a discotheque, but planning such entertainment for students was a wrong move. He further said that this could ruin the reputation of the institution, which is funded by taxpayer’s money.
IITB is located in Powai, Mumbai. The institute was established in 1958 under an Act of Parliament. The reputed institution of information and technology aims to become the fountainhead of new ideas and a leader in science and technology. Its Board of Governors is headed by Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission Dr. Anil Kakodkar.
