Common Man Vs Budget

Cheap passes for commuters
Improvement in amenities , safety , security and punctuality
Good food and adequate drinking water supply
Medical facility, Ambulance in every railway station and one doctor in long route trains

Industry vs Budget

To commit timely delivery of goods, Railways should run the freight trains like passenger trains i.e., time-scheduled freight trains in all-major routes to ensure better customer service
As the existing rail network is not adequate as compared to the burgeoning rail freight business, it should be expanded and dedicated freight lines should be upgraded or accelerated to avoid congestion on the operative routes. The number of existing rakes, wagons and racks should also be substantially increased to cater to the increasing demand.

Highlights of Railway Budget 2011

Safety and Security issues will be the focus this year; improving the signaling system, installing safety related technology like Anti-collision devices (ACD), Train protection warning system (TPWS)

Increase in number of coaches, wagon and locomotives is the target of the department; 4000 coaches from 3700 coaches in the previous year, and as far as wagons and locomotives are concerned they are expected to increase by 18000 and 5000 respectively.

Railway budget 2011 also aims at increasing number of trains and freight, gauge conversion, and doubling of tracks and laying of 1000 km of railway tracks.

Railway department has quoted an approximate amount of Rs 39,600 crore as gross budgetary support in 2011, for ongoing and future projects, for further expanding and modernizing the railway infrastructure of the country.

New Train/Routes

The wait for India's first double decker train will come to an end in 2011-2012 ; these trains will run on Mumbai-Ahmedabad and Howrah-Daund routes.
The work on the new broad gauge (BG) lines being laid on Jayanagar-Darbhanga-Sitamarhi-Bargania-Bikhnatori route under Samastipur division of East Central Railway (ECR) is likely to complete by 2011-2012 which will bring the Raxaul-Sitamarhi-Darbhnaga-Nirmali-Forbesganj-Kishanganj route on the map of the Indian Railways development network.

Challenges

The railway budget is undergoing a financial crisis and in order to overcome it; the department would require an increase in the budgetary support from the Finance Ministry of India.
The railway department is expecting two times the budget allotted in the previous year, to improve safety and security issues, keeping the numerous calamities and mishaps that took place in the year 2010 in mind.
