Tripura sets national record with 93 per cent voting turnout in assembly elections

The North Eastern state of India Tripura has registered a national record in its 60-member assembly elections, with a huge 93% final voting turnout figure. With a total electorate of 23,58,493 voters, this is the highest-ever voting turnout in the country so far. The single phased elections were completely peaceful.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), acting on MANAB's complaint, related to an attempt to commit murder of an RTI activist cum human rights defender, Sanjit Debbarma and consequent police inaction to protect the activist in remote Tripura, has issued summons under Section 13 of Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. They require the Chief Secretary of Government of Tripura to appear personally before the NHRC on 1st March, 2013 at 11am. MANAB is a West Bengal-based human rights organisation.
