Let the people enjoy freedom from AFSPA and batons

I was a Visiting Fellow in Belfast in February-March 1997. It was before the peace process was put in place, and tanks rolled through the city every day, cutting up transit points and streets and shopping places with their basilisk and muted presence.

Rapists must be hanged till death

Rapists must be imprisoned for life, and those who murder their victims, must be given capital punishment. The debate on capital punishment is very vivid, but to me it seems that anyone who takes a life should not object to abdicating his in return. Why should murderers want a lease of life, when they do not respect the life of others?

Jal Satyagrah: Government ignores people's wishes

Farmers stand in line in the water, protesting that their lands have been inundated without compensatory land being given to them. The Supreme Court Judgement on this has been by passed. News of it came to viewers from Headlines Today, and while eating dinner, one watched astounded as the Jal Morcha participants appeared disembodied, their bodies soaked in water, for fourteen days. On 6th September, they were up to their chests, on 7th September 2012, the water was up to their chins.

Teacher's Day 2012: Tuberoses for a teacher

The flowers the boy sold me at the crossing, bloomed today. So all of last week, they were fragrant at night, and today, the buds have opened. 42 flowers for fifty rupees, God bless that little boy for his gift to someone whom he does not know. Tuberoses for a Teacher.
