A renewed debate has started across the country around death penalty to criminals convicted of raping a minor after the brutal rape of five-year-old daughter of a labourer in Delhi. But rapes continue to take place in higher frequency despite the fact that anti-rape were recently strengthened, and death penalty was expanded to repeated rapists and rapes where the victim dies or is left an invalid. Also, the minimum sentence in the rape of minors was increased from seven to 20 years in prison.

Arguing that the readily-available "graphic, violent, brutal, deviant and destructive" pornography has endangered Indian society and led to a spate of rapes, a petitioner advocate Vijay Panjwani has appealed the Supreme Court to ban porn websites.
