Main dry land cotton farmers advocacy group Vidarbha Janandolan Samti (VJAS) from Maharashtra has drawn attention of Indian finance minister Arun Jaitley toward the latest National Crime Records Bureau report, which says that since 1995 to 2013 more than 300,000 farmland suicides took place, which only reveals that every fifth farmer who ended his/her life in the country is dry land cotton farmer from Maharashtra.

Outgoing UPA Govt. has strike last blow to debt trapped 10 million cotton and soybean growers of Maharashtra state mainly from crisis driven and farm suicide hit Vidarbha and Marathawada, when recommendations of the Commission for Agriculture Costs and Prices (CACP) has recommended Rs. 50 to nil hike in Minimum Support Price (MSP) to main cash crop cotton, soybean, paddy and pluses (tur) for next Khariff season 2014-15.
