FROM A battlefield to a sporting arena, Drass moves beyond the scars of the Kargil war to cheer the Polo match conceptualized by The Lalit Suri Hospitality Group who landed at the high turfs today, for a friendly game to promote tourism in the J&K region.The Group marks the celebration of 100 years of the historical Grand Palace earlier known as Gulab Bhawan with the third season of The Lalit Suri Polo 2011 held at the Viswanathan stadium. The initiative reiterates the Group’s effort & commitment to revive tourism opportunities in Kashmir & follows the Group’s philosophy of promoting the destination not just the property.
The match was inaugurated, by Shri Omar Abdullah, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir in the presence of illustriouspersonalities such asLt Gen. A.S. Lambha VCOAS (Vice Chief of Army Staff) & Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Hon’ble Union Minister of New & Renewable Energy. Drass is one of the world highest polo turfs. And this time, it witnessed the likes of Jai Shergill, Ransher Rathod, Navjeet Singh – the famous polo players who played for The Lalit Suri team against the local team.
The Viswanathan Stadium at Drass, at an altitude of 3280 meters and the second coldest habitat on earth, witnessed an enlivening & festive atmosphere.The match was cheered by thousands of locals and was accompanied by traditional SURNA - a wind instrument and DAMAN - traditional percussion instrument, without which no polo match is complete in Drass.
The Lalit Suri Hospitality Group was joined by The Drass Team, Leh Team & The Goshan Team led by Mohammed Amin, President Polo Promotion Club Drass& The Lalit team comprising Captain Jai Shergill, Ransher Rathod, Navjeet Singh Sandhu, Angad Singh Sandhu & Pawandeep (Tony) S Kohli.
