In an apparent damage control, day after his angry outbursts targeting politicians with his idiots remark and courting controversy, Bharat Ratna awardee scientist CNR Rao on Monday clarified that he had been misconstrued.
Rao, seeking to elucidate his angry outburst that raised eyebrows, just a day after the government named him for the country's highest civilian award, along with cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar
The eminent scientist who is also the chairman of prime minister's scientific advisory council said that the target of his ire was the 'funding for science' - which he thought was abysmal, forcing him to call it 'idiotic' - and not politicians as was reported.
Here it is noteworthy that Earlier Venting the dissatisfaction in the scientific community over "inadequate" funding, the chairman of Prime Minister's scientific advisory council had said "....Why the hell these idiots these politicians have given so little for us...for the money that government has given to science sector, we have done much more."
However Rao's comments drawn reactions from many quarters over the awful funding priority of the government including Union science and Technology minister Jaipal Reddy who agreed with Rao's views that sufficient funds are not being earmarked for scientific research in the country.
Former ISRO chairman G Madhavan Nair said funds which were reaching for actual research were extremely low.
TMC MP Derek O'brien said, "He (Rao) is an honorable gentleman and recipient of Bharat Ratna. So we shall refrain from making any comment what he said. But obviously after he won the Bharat Ratna, he is entitled to his opinion and we must listen and respect his opinion."
Hence looking at the above facts I would opine that the bullet has already been fired, damage has already been done .as it is now widely established that Science and Research in our county is not supported to a desired level (courtesy Raos angry outburst) doubting governments policies to make India in the top five countries of the world and it is non-reversible.
