DND | 12 Apr 2008

In Uttar Pradesh, the polling for two parliamentary and three assembly seats passed of peacefully amid tight security. 30 to 35 per cent polling has been reported. The bye-election was necessitated due to disqualification of BSP MPs in Khalilabad and Azamgarh parliamentary constituencies while MLAs from Karnailgunj in Gonda and Murad Nagar in Ghaziabad district had resigned. The bye-election for Bilgram assembly constituency was held due to death of sitting MLA. Barring minor incident the polling remained peaceful.

In Orissa, 50 to 55 per cent voters have exercised their franchise in Laxmipur Assembly By poll today. The polling was by and large peaceful. The Returning Officer Mr.D. Jagannath said no untoward incident was reported as a large number of security forces had been deployed to ward off any threat from Maoists. Five candidates are in the fray. The election was necessitated following the death of congress legislator Anantram Majhi.
