Cigar as bad as cigarette
Dr KK Aggarwal | 24 May 2011

People who smoke four or more cigar per-day are exposed to an amount of smoke equivalent to 10 cigarettes, said Padma Shri & Dr. B.C. Roy National Awardee, Dr. KK Aggarwal, therefore, it is not safer than cigarette, as people often misconstrue.

PADMA SHRI and Dr. B.C. Roy National Awardee, Dr. KK Aggarwal, President Heart Care Foundation of India, said that 4-5 cigars a day are as harmful as 10 cigarettes because it leads to heart diseases.

Cigar smoke contains toxic compounds and cancer–causing chemicals in higher concentrations than cigarette smoke. Even those people who do not smoke are exposed to their environmental smoke as cigars burn for longer time than cigarettes.

Cigar smokers, who inhale, have more chances of atherosclerotic dysfunction compared to those non–smokers those who do not smoke and inhale the cigarette smoke. They also have an increased risk of lung diseases such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Also, smoking cigars does not decrease the chances of nicotine addiction.

People who smoke cigars and who do not inhale are at a lower risk of cancer of the upper respiratory tract and lungs, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

However, smoking in any form is a hazard to health. Smokers can take greater care of their health if they completely quit smoking.
