HARISH DIDO | 30 Mar 2014

Resentment among members of District Rifle Shooting Association over non-exemption

There is resentment among members of District Rifle Shooting Association over non-exemption from deposit of arms during election period.

Parvinder Sodhi, Joint Secretary, District Rifle Association, Ferozepur said that district administration has issued a notification for deposit of arms in view of Lok Sabha elections. The Association has applied for permission to exempt its members from depositing arms during elections which has not so far been granted.

He further stated that the Election Commission of India had already agreed to the request to exempt from depositing of arms in 1999 also to the members of National Rifle Association of India as the sportsmen being the members of National Rifle Association, at different levels, have to participate n various sporting events in which they use their rifles.

On the same analogy, we have requested the Deputy Commissioner/District Magistrate for exempting the members of District Ferozepur Rifle Association who is also associated with the National Rifle Association and its part and parcel , he added.

It may be mentioned that the members of District Rifle Association do their practice at  Boparai Rifle Range situated on the outskirts of village khan eke Ahl, inaugurated 38 years back on January 28, 1974.

Sodhi said, all the members of the association, having valid licenses, are good standing members and they will be deprived to their practice at the shooting range apart from participating in any sporting event which may be organized during the election period.

He said, there is a great resentment among the members for not getting exemption to deposit the arms during the elections and appealed to the Election Commission of India to exempt them from deposit of arms.
