FIFA defending champions Spain badly lost their opening World Cup match to a better and aggressive Netherlands team going out for a kill. In the Group B opener on the second day the event played in Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador on Friday, June 13, Vicente del Bosque`s side conceded a humiliating defeat of five goals to one.
Spectacular and stunning goals from Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben of Netherlands completely demolished Spain. In 2010, Spain had defeated Netherlands in the final match. But, the table got turned this time and Netherlands took sweet revenge with Van Persie and Robben scoring two goals each for their side.
In another Group A match, Mexico beat Cameroon 1-0 at Natal that witnessed a few refereeing hiccups. In the second group B match Chile was able to hold back Australian team and won the match by 3-1.
It may be noted that in the group stage, it is going to a round-robin competition between the 32 teams divided among eight groups of four. The two best teams in each group will progress to the knockout stage.
