Five day long first North East (NE) National Service Scheme (NSS) festival was held from November 12 to 16 at the indoor hall of the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex in Imphal, informed facebook friend Ramesh Kumar Bashel with some pictures. The festival was inaugrated by Chief Minister of Manipur Okram Ibobi Singh.

Atleast 350 NSS volunteers from the various NE states are taking part in the festival the auspices of the Department of Youth Affairs. Participants of the festival visited the town of Moirang as a part of the community work along with attending academic and participating in cultural sessions.

Looking at the success of the festival, it has ben decided three similar festivals will be organized in the cities of Shillong, Aizawl and Agartala in January and February next year. The puse of the regional NSS festivals is make students acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude;develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters; and practice national integration and social harmony.

The NSS moto "Not Me, But You" reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service. The programme underlines that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of society on the whole.

As we know that the NSS programme aims to inculcate social welfare in students, and to provide service to society without bias. "NSS volunteers work to ensure that everyone who is needy gets help to enhance their standard of living and lead a life of dignity. In doing so, volunteers learn from people in villages how to lead a good life despite a scarcity of resources. it also provides help in natural and man-made disasters by providing food, clothing and first aid to the disaster victims," say the programme organizers.
