Future of Indian football
jane | 16 Jan 2011

Football scenario in India is quite contrasting. Indian football still remains where it started. It is not because we lack quality players. Initiatives, good infrastructure and good trainers are what we lack to take it to the level of world football.

RIGHT NOW, if we look at it, we have a national team for cricket as well as football. But in terms of reputation, remuneration and opportunities, Indian cricket players are more in favour than Indian football players.

Cricket has become most popular game. It is like cricket has merged into the spirit of Indian people. We have different generations of India watching cricket on a regular basis. But, the football scenario in India is quite contrasting. Indian football still remains where it started. There are no sponsors, no initiatives to take it to the level of world football.

It is not because we lack quality players. That is not the issue here. We can find equally talented players in football. Initiatives, good infrastructure and good trainers are what we lack.

There are plenty of possibilities for the future of Indian football. If we look at the world football, it is at its best. With Indian brands gaining popularity outside the country, we have good chances of attracting sponsors. In fact, many things have started happening in favour of Indian football since the arrival of the football legend, Maradona in Kolkata, two years back.

We can expect much from the coming generations. Today’s youth are vibrant and full of passion. They can break the norms and spread out to different fields. And those with passion and flair in football would definitely want to play for India if provided a great opportunity. Hopefully may be in two decades our football game would make it to the world level.
