Gender equity needs to be given more emphasis
Ronnieta Sarkar | 24 Jan 2011

A society can never be completed without women. India needs to show the right attitude towards women section of our society. This must sound like feminism. But the real fact is gender equality which is not getting proper focus.

THERE IS no chance of the welfare of the world unless the condition of women is improved. It is not possible for a bird to fly on one wing - Swami Vivekananda

A society can never be completed without women. India needs to show the right attitude towards women section of our society. This must sound like feminism. But the real fact is gender equality which is not getting proper focus.

History : If we go back to the ancient period, we will discover a male dominated society and an orthodox mentality towards the women in the society. The Indian women were always meant to remain behind curtains and the role of women was nothing but to produce children. The scenario began to change when India began to fight for freedom and women also asserted with full might and this happened in a number of other countries as well. However, nothing much changed and the only difference which came about was the role of woman was slightly changed.

Modernisation : The more a country gets modernised, the more the country improves her image and status. Naturally, the effect of modernisation can be found in the society as well as in the women in the society. Now maximum women are getting proper education and aspiring for a higher goal and career which was not possible in ancient India.

Media and Women : Media is constantly trying to uphold the miseries of women. They highlight the women achievers to inspire the women. There are many female journalists, who bring the proper attention of the society towards women. But media also represents women in an indecent way very often. The serials use to represent female characters either as a tormentor or as a victim. Both of the images are not beneficial at all.

Government and Women : Government has introduced lots of laws to protect the wome but still not much has changed in the country. Do we really need quotas for women in every sector of the society? If yes, then it is against gender equality. The government is active in creating quotas for weaker and destitute section of the society as well as for women. Does not it mean that India is still following the same orthodox mentality towards women and posing an ignorant attitude towards the women? Why do the women need quota in every field even in the parliament?

Conclusion : Is modified country equal to a changed country? Well our society stands between this kind of confusion. India is now a modified country. The proper western model is needed to build such society which is free of a struggling world image. And according to that model, there should not be any kind of gender inequity. The motive of both the government and the media should not be only to improve the quality of life of the fairer sex but also to improve their status at the gender bias level of the society.
