WHAT IS the best gift one can give to a couple getting married? A box of condoms and a box of 5 mg folic acid tablets, said Padma Shri & Dr. B.C. Roy National Awardee, Dr. KK Aggarwal, President, Heart Care Foundation of India. Post marriage one habitually will need one of the two. If the couple wants to get pregnant, will need folic acid if not, then condoms would be a good bet. So, are you ready to gift these to the new couple?

CDC and the US Public Health Service recommend every woman, who could become pregnant to get 400 micrograms (400 mcg) of synthetic folic acid every day. The B vitamin folic acid helps in preventing birth defects. If a woman has sufficient folic acid in her body before and while she is pregnant, her baby is less likely to have a major birth defect in the brain or spine.

Folic acid is a B vitamin. Our body uses it to make new cells. Everyone needs folic acid. But for women who can get pregnant, it is considered to be really important. These birth defects are neural tube defects or NTDs. Women need to take folic acid every day, starting before they are pregnant to put a check over NTDs.

Birth defects of the brain and spine happen in the first few weeks of pregnancy, often before a woman finds out that she is pregnant. Women should get in the habit of taking folic acid daily even when they are not planning to get pregnant. For folic acid to play an important role, a woman needs to take it every day, starting before she becomes pregnant.

One cannot get all the folic acid and other vitamins needed from the food as folic acid is destroyed in Indian cooking.
