Gu Kailai gets suspended death sentence for British bussinessman's murder
Dr. Lalit Kishore | 23 Aug 2012

Gu Kailai, 54, the wife of disgraced Chinese politician Bo Xilai's, has been given a suspended death sentence by a Hefei court for murdering Neil Heywood - a British businessman.

GU HAD confessed murder earlier, but the case turned into a political scandal to cost her husband Bo Xilai his job who was a powerful leader of China.

However, the suspended death sentence has the possibility of being converted to life imprisonment after two years if the good conduct is shown by the convict in the intervening period. The sentence has a two-year reprieve and life imprisonment is contingent upon Gu’s good behavior.

According to the case history, Gu's orderly Zhang Xiaojun had administering cyanide to Neil Heywood in November last year on her insistence. Zhang Xiaojun has been handed down a sentence of nine years in prison. Heywood was married to a Chinese woman and had high-profile links.

Gu was convicted of poisoning Heywood, a business associate, in November last year at Chongqing city after falling out over a business deal.
