Illegal arms market should not be allowed to flourish
Vishnu Mohan | 26 Nov 2012

It would be in the fitness of things to modernize the existing law on this subject matter to discourage people from getting into such deals.

THE EXISTING laws governing gun control norms need to be reformed to discourage people from getting access to fire arms. A recent media report informed, “Go to Gaffar Market in the heart of Delhi and take your pick from an AK-47 or AK-74 – a market that thrives because of illegal arms.”

Illegal arms market seem to be on; a spokesperson says: “…But what most people don’t know is that Gaffar Market, a part of Karol Bagh, is also the place where one can buy an AK-47 or AK-74, for anything between Rs.60,000 and Rs.5 lakh, depending on the originality of the weapon. The arms market is thriving and the law is ill-equipped to put curbs on to it. “

Going by the above, it would be in the fitness of things to modernize the existing law on this subject matter to discourage people from getting into such deals.
