Indonesian officials commemorate the 10th anniversary of Indian Ocean Tsunami

A decade before Indonesia and some part of India like Tamil Nadu witnessed to the natural calamity i.e Indian Ocean tsunami. Earlier, nobody was aware about this term which took almost 230,000 people lives. Today, officials of Indonesia offered a floral tributes to those who lost their lives in 2004 tsunami. The whole region come together to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the catastrophe.

The tragedy happen on 26 December 2004 when Indian Ocean faced undersea megathurst earquake. It was one of the deadliest natural disasterts in the recorded history. Indonesia was the hardest hit country whereas Sri Lanka, India and Thailand followed the same. Only in Aceh at least 168,00 people dead as it was the closest point to the epicenter.

The coastal areas in the region completely wiped out by the 10-meter killer wave. The wave had been trigged by a 9.1 magnitude earthquake off western Indonesia. It leaved at least 226,000 people dead. The commemorate also being joined by the Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla and his wife Mufidah. Both led a delegation of officials who paid tribute and their respect to those who died in the tragedy.

2004 Indian Ocean tsunami was also given various names like Christmas tsunami, Indonesian tsuname, the Boxing Day tsunami and South Asian Tsunami.
