Leaders greet nation on Parsi Navroz

President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice President Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh while greeting the nation on the eve of Navroz - the Parsi New Year observed on Sunday, August 18 wished people peace and prosperity.

Mukherjee said that Navroz symbolised new beginnings and reminded us of the rich diversity and inclusiveness of our culture."May this festival bring peace and prosperity in the lives of all people and reinforce our commitment to synthesis, harmony and goodwill towards all," he added. 

In his message, Hamid Ansari said that Navroz was an important symbol of our rich heritage and a vibrant composite culture. "May this joyous occasion bring peace, progress and happiness in our lives," wished Ansari. 

Manmohan Singh said that Navroz is a celebration of renewal, righteous living and harmony. "It marks the unity in diversity of Indian culture with the focus on human values. May the occasion bring well-being and happiness to all Parsis and the entire nation," Singh added. 

The Parsi New Year is celebrated as Jamshed Navroz by the entire Parsi community. The festival falls on the first day of the first month of the Fasli calendar and is observed with great fun and fervour. 

On the occasion of Navroz, Parsis wear new clothes; gold and silver kustis and caps. It is celebrated in the spirit of friendship, happiness and harmony. Parsis also decorate their houses with auspicious symbols like stars, butterflies, birds and fish as per their tradition.
