I think that rather than agriculture business and agro-industries, agriculture itself has to be treated as an industry. At present, what happens is that a farmer cannot buy costly inputs like fertilizers, better seeds, tractors and other machineries. So he takes loans for purchasing these costly inputs and when he cannot pay back his loans because he does not understand the agricultural marketing, he commits suicide. This is the tragedy of the country. Now if land related laws are amended and corporates are allowed to enter agriculture sector, they can provide all the facilities to the farmers and farmers can in return have an assured income. No doubt, the farmer would become wage earners instead of land holders but there may not be any compulsion in this regard so that only those small and marginal farmers who are interested in handing over their land to corporates may do so. The more prosperous farmers would, of course, not sell their land. This proposal needs to be thought over by our Government to empower India's villages and hence India itself.
