Basuri Desai | 27 Jan 2011

Police Inspector Sandesh Chodankar, Police Sub Inspector Radhesh Ramnathkar and constable Sandip Shirvaikar are placed under suspension Goa Police spokesperson Atmaram Deshpande informed.

In NRI’s custodial death in Goa, Goa Police today suspended a police inspector, a sub inspector and a constable from service for procedural lapses

Cypriano Fernandes, who was arrested for threatening his lady friend, had died in the police custody at Panaji police station.

Police Inspector Sandesh Chodankar, Police Sub Inspector Radhesh Ramnathkar and constable Sandip Shirvaikar are placed under suspension Goa Police spokesperson Atmaram Deshpande informed.

He said that the interim primary report submitted by deputy superintendent of police Boussette Silva had confirmed procedural lapses after Cyrpriano was arrested. The inquiry report has found that there were no proper arrest formalities conducted after his
arrest.

Deshpande also said that although there are procedural lapses, they have nothing to do with the cause of death. “Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) will decide Cypriano’s death is custodial death or not” he said.

The inquiry has revealed that all the lapses occurred when police inspector was present at the police station.

Silva will give final report within a week after which departmental inquiry would be initiated against all the three suspended officers.

Cypriano, a NRI on his vacation in Goa, was arrested on January 7 after his lady friend informed police that he was threatening her. The family members of Cypriano had refused to take over the body demandingaction against the police officers responsible for his death.
