THE INFLATION number that has come today is very disturbing. I had expected the inflation to show a rise by April 2011 but it seems that it is already going out of control. Looking at the world scenario I am of the view that food prices will continue to rise and for a country like India it is disastrous.
 
If we are under the impression that RBI will be able to control inflation based on monetary policies, we are mistaken. It is the government that has to take steps and steps must be taken immediately. To my mind agriculture, environment must take precedence over industry because with a 120 crore population if India does not have enough to eat, no industry can run and we can forget about 8% growth rate of GDP. To my mind, Government should target 6% GDP growth and push structural reforms in education and agriculture.

The fall in the non-food inflation number is also temporary, with the hot money still coming to India, the number is bound to rise again. I expect the fuel inflation to move up in the coming year and that will also put pressure on overall inflation numbers.

In the coming months I expect the government borrowing to go up that will further fuel inflation.”– Siddharth Shankar.
